Our Story Begins in 1967
Humble Beginnings
When Ben and Leidy Vermeulen founded West Bay Shipyards in 1967, they had modest plans to build and repair boats. Ben had arrived in Vancouver from war-torn Holland eight years earlier, equipped with just $52 in his pocket and some early training as a goldsmith. He worked with a Lower Mainland wrought-iron fabricator and started a steel company, which provided the foundation for his next venture: boat building. This new endeavor quickly became a lifelong passion and a family labour of love.
Building the Westbay Legacy
In the early years, the boats they built were known as “Westbays,” reflecting their commitment to quality and craftsmanship. One of the notable series from this period was the “Westbay Lloyds,” a line of 45′ vessels introduced in the 1980s. These boats played a crucial role in establishing West Bay Shipyards’ reputation and marked the company’s shift towards more sophisticated yacht construction. The Vermeulens’ expertise wasn’t limited to yachts; they also built various other vessels, including crew boats, water taxis, and police boats, showcasing their versatility and dedication to meeting diverse maritime needs.
The Introduction of SonShip
As the company grew, so did their ambitions. In approximately 1990, West Bay Shipyards introduced the SonShip Series, another brand under their expanding portfolio. The SonShip Series represented the pinnacle of their yacht construction capabilities, combining innovative design with superior craftsmanship. This new brand further solidified West Bay Shipyards’ legacy in the yacht-building industry, attracting clients who appreciated the meticulous attention to detail and the personalized service that the Vermeulen family provided.
Looking to the Future
Today, West Bay Shipyards stands as a testament to Ben and Leidy Vermeulen’s vision and hard work. From humble beginnings with just a few tools and a dream, they built a thriving business that continues to influence the boat-building industry. Although we are no longer actively building boats, our passion for the craft remains. We would gladly resume our boat-building endeavors if the right opportunity presented itself. As we look to the future, we remain inspired by our past and excited for the possibilities that lie ahead. Our commitment to excellence and innovation continues to drive us forward, ensuring that the legacy of West Bay Shipyards lives on.
